My name is Amy Attwood and I am from Australia. I am currently volunteering at the Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond.
Over the last 2 months that I have been working at the turtle sanctuary I have had such a fantastic experience. The team there have been very welcoming and have helped me to learn more about this amazing reptile and its conservation programme in Zanzibar.
The foundation is well respected throughout the local community and I believe the education to the local people and the fisherman is positive and is helping the conservation of the turtles.
The turtle release day in february was such a remarkable experience, where we release 20 turtles back into the ocean. There was approximately 400 local people for the release. It was incredible to see the local people be so involved in this project with such passion.
Another highlight was having the President of Zanzibar coming to the sanctuary. He was so happy with the achievements of the conservation.
At the moment we have a large number of baby sea turtles, which i'm very pleased in being able to help these turtles survive and hopefully live to they are more than 100 years old.
